Garbage

Diary, Tuesday 25 November 1997

The day started off bad. In the shower I looked out of our bathroom window and discovered that the dogs had rummaged around in our garbage. It was spread over a radius of twenty metres. Having dried myself, changed Joshua and woken Rosie and the boys I went downstairs. Victoria offered me thin, colourless plastic gloves and I emerged into the warming day. The sun shone and the dew was still on the fresh succulent grass. The garbage was already a few days old and there were a lot of food rests from dinner parties. Rotten papaya’s, onions, limes, rice mixed with the meat sauce of two days ago, bread which had been smeared with unidentifiable substances. Plastic bags contaminated with the smears and condensation of rot.
