“There are so many
people on the streets,” said the lady sitting next to me in the car. “They all
seem to be doing nothing but sitting around. Perhaps in Northern countries
people sit doing nothing inside.”
Diary Saturday 10th
September, 1994: Because life is lived not within the house, but without, on
the streets, there is much directionlessness. The wandering and pottering
around the house is here a wandering and pottering long the streets. Everyybody
is outside. This does not necessarily make people more lazy despite the
apprearance of so much sedentary action. It just makes an endemic
directionlessness visible where otherwise it is neatly hidden in houses.
Civilisation consists in hiding things.
Eliot: Choruses from the Rock: We
would build the beginning and the end of this street. We build the meaning.
