Self
This island of Jamaica, this
house of humiliation and misery as William Beckford described it in 1790,
at once so acutely wonderful and so acutely sad, has become my wrestling
partner. It has forced me to come to terms with new and plural selves, with
aspects of my being which I had never known, aspects which had been kept fresh
for me, here in my absence, to be added on my arrival.
