Past

Diary Saturday 10th September 1994: The archaic features of Jamaican Culture are a form of counter culture: religion and its sweet moralities; English proprieties set against the wish to dissociate from the bonds of colonial culture. Jamaica has become enveloped in a past it does not recognise. A past which has been transplanted from elsewhere. It rejects the past it has reconstructed The terrible fierceness and sensitivity to identity, consists in twisting the culture it has selected in bits and pieces. A twisting of imitations. An imprisonment in an asserted freedom. The man wear his trousers with one leg short and one leg long> That man does too.
