Memory and the future

Memory will make us immortal. What does it mean to be anxious about the future? It means that we are frightened of the past, which has shown the present to have extraordinary obliterating power. What does it mean to be anxious about preserving the past? It is the anxiety for mythical monsters. We conquer nightmares by documenting them carefully and lovingly. Making much of every moment of disgust. In order not to die of anxiety about the future we need the sedative of a real past. So that we cannot be lulled to sleep by men in search for their own narrow and separate immortality. The computer would seem to be the answer to cope with the enormous amount of information the search for the past continually generates. Wealth will generate itself.
